5 Healthy Aging Wellness Tips & A Juice Cleanse Detox
Men and women of all ages, starting as early as their 20s, are constantly searching for ways to turn back the clock and keep their skin looking as hydrated, supple and ageless as they feel on the inside. In the battle against aging, there are, no doubt, countless bogus remedies out there that promise wrinkle-free, glowing skin, extra energy and a lean body practically overnight. When it comes down to it, though, there are no miracle cures for aging except to embrace the inevitable and treat our bodies with care and gratitude so that we can age gracefully and beautifully.
While there are no quick fixes to getting older, there are absolutely things we can all do to ease us into older age looking and feeling our best. No, these tips are not quick fixes and they will not combat years of damage and unhealthy habits. They require hard work and discipline, and over time, will lead to better sleep, more hydrated and glowing skin, less bloating and fatigue, and increased confidence in your own skin. Start incorporating these 10 anti-aging practices into your lifestyle and you’ll begin to see positive changes throughout your whole body. Plus, we’ve outlined a simple, beginner’s juice cleanse detox to follow each week to kickstart the process and leave you feeling more energized and youthful than ever.
Limit Daily Stress
We know — dialing back on daily stressors is way easier said than done, but the benefits are tenfold. When our bodies become stressed, we release stress hormones such as cortisol that alert our bodies immediately and send us into fight or flight mode. With work deadlines, family responsibilities, and the daily grind, many of us are walking around in our daily lives in a constant state of fight-or-flight. This constant stream of cortisol and adrenaline pumping through our bodies does a number on our systems and can lead to early signs of aging, including dry, dehydrated skin, excess belly fat, and thin, brittle hair and nails.
Our best advice for combatting daily stressors — don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s as simple and as complicated as that. Prioritize the things that are most important to you in life and leave the rest to fate. Focus on the things you can control, and remind yourself to let the rest fall away. Instead of working yourself up over a big presentation at work, prepare yourself to a reasonable extent, and then let yourself relax. No amount of stress or worry will change the outcome of anything.
Try incorporating a daily mantra into your morning routine to remind yourself to be calm, stay level-headed, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Starting the day off with a mantra is a gentle way of easing into the day and setting positive intentions for its outcome.
Meditation is another wonderful way to ease into the day and take time for yourself, so you don’t leave the house with low-level stress for the rest of the day. If sitting on a pillow in silence for 30 minutes is a bit much for you, try walking meditation to start. Simply leave the house for a 10 or 15 minute walk around the block and try to enjoy the scenery around you, without allowing thoughts or worries about the day ahead clog your mind.
Practice Daily Rituals
At Pure Green, we are huge fans of daily rituals. Not only do they create a sense of comfort throughout the day, but they can also create little pockets of space for you to check in with yourself and how you’re feeling. After all, how you feel on the inside is directly reflected in how you appear on the outside.
One of our favorite daily rituals is a tall glass of water with lemon, followed by a cold pressed green juice first thing in the morning. This combo is ultra hydrating, detoxifying, and metabolism-boosting, and sets the tone for a day of healthy eating and mindful behaviors. Pure Greens with apple, lemon and ginger is a favorite for this morning ritual, but if you’re not a fan of very green juice, you can try the Wake Up Call, made with cold pressed apple, lemon, ginger and cayenne pepper for an extra kick.
Something as simple as a 20 minute walk after lunch is an excellent ritual to incorporate into your daily routine. These small practices break up the day and help you connect with your mind and body. Take these opportunities to check in with how you’re feeling and what your body is asking for.
Ditch the Gym
You heard us right. While it definitely isn’t a bad thing to hit the gym for your daily workout, you’ll reap so many more holistic benefits by taking your workouts outside and switching things up. Do a calisthenics routine in the park, go for a run outdoors, or grab a buddy for a partner yoga class. This way, you’ll never run the risk of getting bored of the same old routine and you’ll soak up some much needed vitamin D.
One of our favorite parts of an outdoor workout is the social element. At the gym, it’s hard to workout with a friend because you’re both on different machines in your own worlds. But outdoors, you can jog with a buddy and enjoy the fresh air, or try something new like partner pilates or a sparring session. Plus, turning your workout hour into a social hour makes the time fly by, so you won’t even notice how hard your body is working.
Drink Plenty of Water
Nothing ages the skin faster than dehydration. And no, you cannot get all the water your body needs from fruits and veggies alone. You should aim to consume at least 64 ounces of water every single day to help your body flush toxins from your system and keep your internal systems running smoothly.
Our favorite trick for getting enough H2O throughout the day is to set an alarm every hour on the hour as a small reminder that it’s time to drink another glass of water, or refill your glass. Of course, carrying a reusable water bottle makes it so much easier to remember when it’s time for a refill. We don’t leave the house without one.
Do a Weekly Cleanse
A weekly cleanse, you say? No, we’re not talking about a 3 day fast every single week. Instead, we love to incorporate a one day juice cleanse detox into our weekly routine to reset and allow our digestive system to rest and recoup.
We recommend following a juice cleanse detox on a weekend, usually Sunday, to avoid interfering with weekly work responsibilities. Our program involves consuming four cold pressed juices throughout the day, and then enjoying a sensible dinner consisting of lean protein and leafy greens in the evening.
